Mini-Rumination: Are Baseball Players Too Blasé?

Anyone who thinks that because professional athletes make so much money they are completely jaded and blasé and don’t really care whether their team wins or loses needs to watch what happens when a baseball team comes from behind and wins a game in the bottom of the ninth inning:  the players run out onto the field and jump up and down and hug and pound each other like they’re little leaguers.

Too blasé?  Too cool to show excitement?  Hardly.

Agreed. I was at the Phillies game last night. When Chooch hit the home run in the bottom of the eighth inning last night to give the Phils an important insurance run, the Phillies bench erupted in joy. From my left-field seats, the sight of a couple dozen millionaires jumping up and down in the dugout was impressive…they didn’t look too jaded to me.
