And for Christmas, a Lump of Coal for Kohl’s

That’s because the greedy retailer opened its doors this morning at 7:00 and will keep them open until 6:00 pm on December 24. To save you from doing the math, that’s 170 consecutive hours that Kohl’s stores will remain open – and a lot of close-to-minimum wage employees forced to work ridiculous hours.

Because the world really needs its 3:00 am retail fix.

The folks at Kohl’s describe their plan as “an added convenience to holiday shoppers.” They also say they are doing this in response to “positive customer feedback.”

The Curmudgeon finds the whole thing reprehensible.

My daughter quit her part time job at Kohl’s about 2 weeks ago (and not a moment too soon), their policies like the round the clock hours (and being open on Thanksgiving) being a major reason. She works full time but kept the job for the last few years because of the (not very much) extra money but mostly for the discount on clothes since as a 20 something girl apparently you can never have too many clothes (a sentiment I outgrew long ago but I empathize having felt the same way in my 20s). I guess she felt you have to draw the line somewhere (or maybe she’s just run out of room to put more clothes).

Businesses have the power to put their employees in a very tough situation: do as we say or you’re gone. Sort of like my Thanksgiving story.
