A Senior Moment

No, not that kind of senior moment; The Curmudgeon’s not that old. This was a senior in high school senior moment.

It happened yesterday, while The Curmudgeon was running an errand at lunchtime. A local radio station has a feature called “Rewind” that offers a few “on this date” pop culture memories: movies debuts, famous albums released, stars getting married or dying on this date, things like that.

Minnie Riperton - or, for our younger readers, SNL alumna Maya Rudolph's mother.

Minnie Riperton – or, for our younger readers, SNL alumna Maya Rudolph’s mother.

On this particular day listeners learned that on this date in 1975 Minnie Riperton topped the pop charts with her famous “Lovin’ You.” (“la la la la la, la la la la la, eeeeeeeeeeeeeee”)

capOn that date in 1975 The Curmudgeon was a little more than two months away from graduating from high school, a full head of hair on his head, barely a hint of a whisker on his face, and only a little less curmudgeonly than he is today. He remembers the song clearly, remembers liking it, and for a moment he could picture himself in the halls of Lincoln High School in Philadelphia, kicking closed his locker (#10743) with a bell bottom-covered leg after second period, Andi a few lockers to his right and Scott a few lockers to his left, thinking about whether this might be the year the Phillies turn it around, wondering if his ’68 Olds Cutlass needed gas (red with a black vinyl roof – remember vinyl roofs?), trying to remember if he was working at Baskin-Robbins that night, and heading down the 140 hall with Scott to Mr. McCoy’s Latin class.

And if the driver in the car next to The Curmudgeon’s had looked over at that moment she would have seen a great big, goofy smile on the face of the bald guy behind the wheel.

I love it that someone else remembers Minnie Ripperton as someone other than Maya Rudolph’s mother. I was graduating from college in 1975,and “Loving You” brings back many, many memories.
