They Say They Care About Your Health

But they care about money more.

How else do you explain the 14 hospitals across the country that have a McDonald’s restaurant on the premises?

You know, McDonald’s: pusher of high-calorie, high-fat, high-sodium, no-good-for-you food.

This came to the Curmudgeon’s attention a little while back courtesy of a Tampa Bay Business Journal article (yes, he knows: he has strange reading habits) about protesters complaining about the presence of a McDonald’s at Tampa General Hospital. The article noted that a number of hospitals, including the highly regarded Cleveland Clinic, had recently ended their relationships with McDonald’s.

And it also reminded The Curmudgeon that in the early 1990s he was shocked – shocked, he tells you! – to find a McDonald’s just inside the entrance of perhaps the most beloved and highly regarded hospital in Philadelphia. How could a hospital, that symbol of health and of health care, possibly associate with those purveyors of McFood?

So The Curmudgeon checked, and McDonald’s is long gone from that hospital, as it should be.

mcdonaldsAnd the 14 hospitals that still offer you supersized fries (610 calories, 29 grams of fat, 390 grams of sodium) and Big Macs (563 calories, 33 grams of fat, 79 milligrams of cholesterol, 1007 (!) grams of sodium) at the same time they tell you to eat better and exercise more and take care of yourself in general should do the same.
