A Nice Idea…But Only in Theory

erWe’re hearing about this more often now: hospitals with web sites that enable you to check on the waiting time in their emergency rooms.

It sounds like a great idea. During his life, and especially during his youth, The Curmudgeon has spent his fair share of time in hospital ERs. He wrote a few years ago, in fact, about spending four hours in a hospital ER with his mother after she fell and broke her arm and hit her head.

But on the other hand…

If you have the time, and the presence of mind, to go to a web site to find out how long the wait is in your nearest hospital’s ER…

Doesn’t it seem reasonable to conclude that what you’re experiencing isn’t a real emergency after all and that you should be looking elsewhere for care?
