A Question About Word Choice

For years and years and years, drugs that had certain ingredients in them were called opiates.

Opiates.

In the past few years, though, and especially the past year or two, they’ve come to be referred to as opioids.

No, opioids are NOT super-fans of the popular movie director.

No, opioids are NOT super-fans of the popular movie director.

Opioids.

Did you notice?

And with his inquiring mind, The Curmudgeon wants to know:

Why?

Why the change?

What about “opiates” was inadequate and necessitated the change to “opioids”?
